Become a Health Coach!

Last October, I started one of the most exciting journeys of my life.

At a time when I was unemployed and questioning the career path I had chosen, I found the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. I first saw it on a blog I read, thought it sounded cool and moved on. Then I saw it again. And again. This health coaching program I had never even heard of was now popping up all over the place, so I reached out to Emily Levenson, an IIN graduate in my area, and met with her to pick her brain about the school.

After talking to Emily, I knew IIN was the right program for me. Not only does the school teach hundreds of dietary theories, it also covers other aspects of wellness, like physical activity, emotional health and the importance of satisfying careers and relationships.

Though this all sounded wonderful, the thing I was most scared about was running my own business—I had no idea what that involved! When Emily told me that IIN covered all of this information in the curriculum AND offered a second year of instruction completely dedicated to coaching and business skills (for free!), any doubts I had disappeared.

Once I decided to take this leap, I waited until a scholarship was available. I saved $500 because of it, along with another $500 for paying in full (shout out to my boyfriend for fronting the money for me!). If it wasn’t for this scholarship, I don’t know if I would have been able to enroll in this program, and I can’t imagine what my life would be like today if I didn’t.

Thanks to the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, I’ve grown into a better version of myself. I’ve developed a healthier relationship with food, become more appreciate of different lifestyles, met some incredible people and even gotten a new job! My life is infinitely better because of IIN and what it’s taught me, and I’m not even finished with the program yet!

If this sounds like something you might enjoy, something you might benefit from or something you might be interested in, I encourage you to learn more. Feel free to reach out to me or do some research on your own, but don’t hesitate to explore IIN because you aren’t sure about it. From firsthand experience, I can promise you one thing: it will change your life!

If you’re already prepared to take the plunge (yay!), I have some good news: if you enroll between now and Memorial Day, you can take advantage of a $1,000 scholarship! The amount awarded depends on how you choose to pay, and I only have two to give away, so be sure to act quickly. If you’re interested in enrolling or simply want to learn more about IIN, just contact me and we can chat!

Finding What’s Missing

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Integrative Nutrition Mega Conference in Long Beach, Calif. I have to be honest: in the final days leading up to the conference, there was a little voice inside my head questioning whether or not I should attend. In fact, there was a teeny tiny piece of me that was hoping something would come up that would keep me from being able to go.

Sounds crazy, right? I mean, who in her right mind would want to pass up an opportunity to go to California and spend a weekend with people who share the same passion for health and wellness she has? This girl. Maybe not all of this girl, or even most of this girl, but the little voice in her head did—the same voice that spent so many years telling her how fat or ugly she was.

For whatever reason, I started to question whether or not I deserved to go to this conference. Though the initial hesitation came from the few pounds I’ve recently gained, the real culprit was my worrying mind and misleading imagination.

Everyone at this conference is going to be so fit and healthy and perfect! What if I don’t fit in? What will people think of me? I’ve gained some weight, I won’t look good in my clothes, I won’t be good enough.

Ridiculous thoughts like these swam through my head. But you know what? With a little bit of distraction and a lot of self-love, I shut them up. And I’m so glad I did.

No Negative Thoughts Allowed

This conference taught me SO much. I learned about different dietary theories and new business tools, visited California for the first time and ate delicious food. Though these things alone made the trip worthwhile, the moments I’ll never forget happened on my last night in California with the women I had the privilege of staying with for the weekend.

After a busy and exciting day, the Casa Blanca Ladies (named after the house we rented) decided to go out to dinner, enjoy some wine and have some deep life conversations—my favorite kind. Due to jet lag and and early mornings, I missed the first two nights of sharing and talking, but I wasn’t about to miss out on this! Craving some meaningful conversation, I was determined to do whatever it took to keep myself awake—even if it did mean pinching myself from time to time.

After dinner, a group of us gathered in the living room area and started to talk. I can’t remember how the topic came up, but Holly and Charlotte started talking about traditional Native American religion and spirituality. I immediately started to ask a million questions and found myself absolutely fascinated by what they were talking about: auras, energies, spirits… This was the most I’d ever talked about spirituality, and I loved what I was learning!

Once the conversation began to slow down, most of the women in the house ventured down to the beach for a healing session. Charlotte cleansed our spirits with burnt sage, and we were taught a simple way to let go of something we felt was holding us down. My food issues came to mind, and though I felt somewhat lighter after the process, I could still feel a negative energy lingering around me. It was at this point that I tried another technique with Holly and spent time talking to her about my disordered eating and the feelings I have surrounding it. To be able to truly open up and talk was wonderful, and I woke up feeling better than I have in a long time—like a weight had been lifted.

I’m not saying this one healing ritual cured me of my issues; I know it will take time for that to happen. It did, however, make me take notice of something that’s been missing in my life for as long as I can remember: spirituality. I’ve never been much of a religious person (aside from attending a youth group during my early teens), so I had written off religion and spirituality. I disagree with a lot of what some organized religions preach and had never really felt like anything was missing in my life until Sunday night.

Thanks to Holly, Charlotte and the rest of the Casa Blanca Ladies, I’ve decided to find a part of my life that I didn’t even know was missing. Not wanting to identify with a specific religion or even denomination, I’ve been researching Unitarian and Unity churches in my area. For the first time, I’m excited to find a church that’s right for me and explore a new, deeper part of myself.

Without knowing it, I’ve been depriving myself, and God (or whoever is up there) knows I don’t need to do anymore of that. It’s time for some soulful nourishment.

What do you do to feel connected to your spirituality or religion?

IINspiring is a Mega Understatement

In Monday’s post, I mentioned going to sunny California for the weekend. Anyone remember that? I flew out there Thursday morning for the Integrative Nutrition Mega Conference, an event that brought together thousands of IIN students and graduates for a weekend full of passion, encouragement and true IINspiration! Recapping the entire event would result in a post long enough to make your eyes cross, so I’ll only highlight some of my favorite parts—though I can’t promise that’ll make it much shorter!

Someone upstairs wanted to help me stay on track with my sugar detox this weekend, because the most popular topic mentioned during Saturday’s presentations was sugar and its addictive and poisonous qualities. Julia Ross, an expert in the field of addiction and passionate about the dangers of sugar, spoke about sugar addiction. If you’ve ever tried to eliminate sugar from your diet, you know how difficult it can be. Ever wonder why? Well, maybe it’s because sugar is four times more addictive than cocaine. Yes, you read that correctly. COCAINE! This blew my mind, but it also made me feel like I wasn’t so crazy for craving the sweet stuff.

My favorite speaker Saturday (and that of many others) was David Wolfe. An advocate of raw foodism, David’s huge personality and infectious energy can be inspiring and terrifying, but one thing’s certain: he definitely makes you consider—even if it’s only for a moment—a raw food diet. He’s so passionate and knowledgeable about the lifestyle, it’s difficult not to hang on his every word! His presentation focused on superfoods, a topic I’ve been slowly learning more and more about. Some of the superfoods I incorporate into my daily diet include chlorella, maca and spirulina.

Superfoods

Many antioxidants are found in superfoods, and they provide the pigments that make foods like blueberries or carrots so vibrant. When in doubt, eat the rainbow—and I’m not talking about Skittles! (Source)

I will say, choosing one or two speakers to highlight from Sunday is impossible—I loved them all! The day kicked off with Stacey Morgenstern and Carey Peterson, two amazing women and the founders of Holistic MBA, a company that helps holistic health coaches develop their practices into more successful and lucrative businesses. They provided fantastic tools and I can’t wait to start using them with my practice!

Continuing with the business-oriented presentations, Eric Barron, a personal branding expert, talked about DiSC behavioral styles and how to use them to better communicate with people. After taking a short survey, I discovered I have a personality with high C (compliance/cautious) and I (influence/interactive) tendencies. Not only was the material interesting (I love personality psychology), Eric was a phenomenal presenter! His delivery was relatable and hilarious.

The final conference speaker was John Robbins, the only son of one of the founders of Baskin Robbins. To make a long story short, John chose not to take over his father’s company and now dedicates himself as an advocate for healthy, happy and sustainable living. He also managed to convince his father to adopt a plant-based diet and helped him add another 20 years to his life—that’s no small feat! The best part of his presentation, however, was just four simple words. “Less pain. More love.”

Though this recap touched on some of the incredible people I had the opportunity to listen to, the real inspiration and learning came from the people I was lucky enough to stay with while in California. My experiences with them deserve an entire post, and that they will. Get ready for some real IINspiration!
