May Foodie Penpals

Now that Memorial Day has come and gone, I feel like summer is really here. On one hand, I’m super excited about that—I’ve got a summer filled with weddings, races and a vacation! But, on the other hand, all I can think about is how fast time is going! Example: I can’t believe it’s already been a month since my last Foodie Penpals post!

The Lean Green Bean

Last month was my first time participating in Foodie Penpals, and I’m so glad I decided to join in! This month my package came from Amanda, and she did a great job. Considering I gave her some unique guidelines (vegan, no refined sugar), she managed to pull together a great assortment of goodies!

FPP - May

That salsa was delicious!

Can’t see what’s in the photo? Here’s a list of what Amanda sent me:

  • 365 Freeze Dried Peach Slices
  • Fredericksburg Farms Old San Antonio Tomatillo Salsa
  • Primal Jerky
  • Tazo Peppermint Tea
  • Two Degrees Bars

Like I said—Amanda did a great job! I’ve been wanting to try Two Degrees bars for a while now, so I was happy to see not one, but two of them in my package (I highly recommend the chocolate banana flavor). Though I’m not much of a tea drinker, the Tazo tea was also delicious—cool, refreshing AND sweetened with stevia! Everything was awesome, but my favorite item in the package was definitely the tomatillo salsa (and my boyfriend can agree with that one). It had great flavor and an even better kick!

If Foodie Penpals sounds like something you want to try, keep reading to learn how.

  • On the 5th of every month, you will receive your penpal pairing via email. It will be your responsibility to contact your penpal and get her mailing address and anything else you might need, like information about allergies or dietary restrictions.
  • You will have until the 15th of the month to put your box of goodies in the mail. On the last day of the month, you will post about the goodies you received from your penpal!
  • The boxes are to be filled with fun foodie things, local food items or even homemade treats! The spending limit is $15, and the box must include something written. This can be anything from a note explaining what’s in the box to a fun recipe—use your imagination!
  • You are responsible for figuring out the best way to ship your package depending on its size and fragility. Don’t forget about flat rate boxes!
  • Foodie Penpals is open to bloggers as well as readers. If you’re a reader and you get paired with a blogger, you are to write a short guest post for your penpal to post on her blog about what you received. If two readers are paired together, neither needs to worry about writing a post for that month!
  • Foodie Penplas is open to U.S. and Canadian residents. Please note, Canadian residents will be paired with other Canadians only. We’ve determined things might get too slow and backed up if we’re trying to send foods through customs across the border from U.S. to Canada and vice versa.

If you’re interested in participating for June, please click here to fill out the participation form
and read the terms and conditions. You must submit your information by June 4th, as pairings
will be emailed June 5th!

If you could create a Foodie Penpals package to send to yourself, what would it include?

My First Foodie Penpals Package!

Can you believe May is practically here? 2012 has been flying by, and I’m not sure I like it! Though I’d like time to pass a little more slowly, I am excited about one thing that comes along with the end of April: a post about my first Foodie Penpals Package!

The Lean Green Bean

Lindsay over at The Lean Green Bean started the Foodie Penpals project in September, and I decided to jump on board in April! My package came from Maria of Pappa Don’t Preach, and let me tell you—she set the bar SUPER high. I loved everything about her package, including the zebra print duct tape she used to wrap it up!

 FPP - April

Everything was as good as it looked—I promise!

In case you have trouble seeing what’s in the photo, here’s a list of what Maria sent me:

  • Doctor Kracker Seedlander Snackers
  • Trader Joe’s Marcona Almonds with Rosemary
  • Trader Joe’s Organic Ginger Pear White Tea
  • Trader Joe’s Red Pepper Spread
  • Nuts Online Cacao Nibs
  • Nuts Online Organic Raw Cacao Goji Energy Squares
  • Pure Bars

If you’re not jealous—you should be! This package was amazing, and I’ve enjoyed everything in it. My top three favorite items were the almonds (the rosemary seasoning was phenomenal), the red pepper spread (it was great on sandwiches) and the energy squares (they’re naturally sweetened and delicious). Fun Facts Friday

Happy Friday! Hopefully you’re reading this from your couch because you don’t have to go to work today (like me!). If you’re not, well… At least it’s still Friday! Since I’m writing this post a little later than planned, I’m going to keep it short (read: I’m feeling a little bit tired and lazy).

Chelsey, the writer behind one of my favorite blogs (Clean Eating Chelsey), writes a “Fun Facts Friday” post for her blog every Friday. Though I can’t commit to doing this every Friday, I am going to give it a try today—so here goes nothin’!

1. Nerd Alert: I really like words. And grammar. Actually, I really like proper grammar. I also really like alliteration, which is why this Fun Facts Friday post is going to list five facts.

2. Tomorrow I’m getting a massage with one of the many Groupons I’ve purchased throughout the past few months. Yes, I have a problem and buy too many of them, but I just can’t pass up a bargain (I blame you, Mom)! I’m excited because I don’t remember the last time I got a massage, and I desperately need one—my legs are pretty tight from all of my half-marathon training.

3. I saw a pretty shocking, kind of disgusting photo on Facebook yesterday. Check it out below:

Sugar Poster

How GROSS is this!? Can you believe THAT much sugar is in ONE Mountain Dew? You’d never eat that much sugar at once, but I see people drink one or two sodas in one sitting without even thinking twice about it. CRAZY!

4. I received AWESOME news today about the Hope Express. We’re organizing virtual runs to raise money for THON and the Four Diamonds Fund! If none of that makes sense to you, don’t worry—I’ll be telling you all about it in a future blog post.

5. About two weeks ago, I decided I wanted to join the Foodie Penpals program that’s been growing in the blogging world. Today, I found out who I’m sending a package to (and who I’m receiving one from!), and I’m super excited! I can’t wait to show you all what I get—it’s like a foodie Christmas!

That’s a wrap! Enjoy your weekend, and stay awesome!

What are some fun facts about you?
